"In the olden days..."
as
our young-uns would say, the Wally Byam Caravan Club operated under
regions: Northeast, Southeast, North Central, Central, South Central,
Northwest and Southwest. Later, multiple state units were
formed. State units came next. The units were responsible
for their own projects and activities, voted in their own officers and
set their own dues. As the membership increased, distance became
a problem, so chapters were formed within the state unit, with the unit
acting as the administrative body. The chapters paid dues to
their unit. The chapters grew very rapidly and some were soon as
large as their parent unit. This created dissatisfaction.
The chapters wanted equal rights and representation on
the international board. In 1961 the chapters were given the
status of units with all the privileges thereof.
And it came to
pass, early in 1961, the Colorado Unit President, Wally Mankin, appointed
Marshall and Betty Wilson along with Dick West, to contact all
Denver Airstream owners regarding their joining the Wally Byam Caravan
Club. This survey met with great enthusiasm and the unit
grew considerably. Later, President Mankin proposed a
survey to ascertain interest in having a chapter in Denver.
This was quite successful and on Memorial Day, 1962, Bob Smith,
National First Vice President and Peggy Pabbles, Field
Representative, with Colorado Unit officers, conducted an
organizational meeting. Marshall and Betty Wilson and Ed
Edwards were appointed temporary officers for the remainder of the
year and were given the necessary paraphernalia to attend the
National Rally at Auburn, Washington (without vote until their
charter was presented).
At a Labor Day Rally,
1962, held at Camp St. Malo, south of Estes Park, Colorado,
President Mankin presented to Marshall Wilson a chapter
charter. Later that afternoon, the chapter members elected
Marshall Wilson President; Betty Wilson, Secretary; Ed Edwards,
Treasurer, for the year 1963.
